he recent CAPA event in Budapest attracted the usual crowd of airline leaders explaining why their strategies were better than others and outlining future plans for development.

I started a long journey recently to Tokyo at Dublin, for a change, largely because the fare was worth a hop across the Irish Sea for! Whilst Dublin’s Terminal 2 looks very shiny and new, unfortunately I was travelling from Terminal 1 which, to be honest, felt like I’d stepped back in time by 20 years.

Late at night on 26 December 2022, China rewrote the travel and tourism script for South East Asia for the New Year. After a disjointed 2022, during which its travel economies began recovering from long pandemic border closures without their largest market, 2023 promised new horizons. The outsized missing piece of the regional puzzle would be back in place.

Connecting Central Asia

With a career of over 35 years spent looking at aviation data and providing insights based on evidence, there is a time when experience also permits me to draw on personal travel episodes to comment on the aviation industry.

After a closed off Q1 2022 and a tentative reopening in Q2 2022, Southeast Asia is in full-flow reopening mode moving into the second half of the year.
